The six essays included here, dating from 1979, signify a transitional stage away from the dualism of A Question of Belief (1978), Mr O’Loughlin’s first collection of philosophical dialogues, and previous works of a mixed-genre character, including Between Truth and Illusion (1977), towards the Spenglerian historicism and even pessimism that, with the influence of environment upon the rise and fall of civilizations, was to characterize his literary work at around this period.
