Apart from the first two pieces, 'The Weekly Lesson' and 'The Weekly Confession', which date from as early as 1976, all the rest of the short stories or works of short prose, as I prefer to call them, collected together here were written between 1979–84 in fairly successive vein, and demonstrate a more philosophically oriented, if not always integrated, approach to the genre which would indicate that, in the five or so years during which I wrote them, I had gravitated away from pure fiction or even poetic fiction towards the philosophical concerns which were to increasingly occupy me in the years to come, not least in respect of an ideological approach to philosophy which was to colour many of the pieces in this collection and cause me to think of them as an adjunct to my purely intellectual writings.  In fact, the inclusion of an aphoristic appendix, which originally followed the piece 'Dream Compromise' (The concluding piece in the eBook version of this title [see below])  in what was formerly a separate volume, and indeed one of a number of such volumes, should testify to my inclination to regard short prose and aphoristic philosophy as two sides of the same metaphysical coin, the prose in question being anything but story-like, in what usually transpires, contrary to the literary grain, to be a series of monologues with transcendental overtones. – John O’Loughlin.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John O’Loughlin was born in Salthill, Galway, the Republic of Ireland, of mixed Irish- and British-born parents in 1952. Following a parental split he was brought to England by his mother and grandmother (who had initially returned to Ireland with her daughter upon the death of her Aldershot-based husband) in the mid-50s and subsequently attended schools in Aldershot, Hampshire and, with an enforced change of denomination from Catholic to Protestant in consequence of having been put into care by his mother upon the death and repatriation of his ethnically-protective grandmother, Carshalton, Surrey. After leaving high school in pre-GCSE era 1970 with an assortment of CSEs (Certificate of Secondary Education) and GCEs (General Certificate of Education), including history and music, he moved to London and went on, via two short-lived jobs, to work at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Bedford Square, where he eventually became responsible for booking examination venues throughout Britain and Ireland. After a brief flirtation with history-orientated further education at Redhill Technical College back in Surrey, he returned to his former job in the West End but, due to a combination of factors, left the Associated Board in 1976 and began to pursue a literary vocation which, despite a brief spell as a computer-cum-office-skills tutor at Hornsey YMCA in the late '80s and early '90s, he has steadfastly continued with ever since, penning (in addition to collections of essays, short prose, dialogues, etc.) some 150 original titles of a mostly philosophical nature.
